🍂What are the dried, leafy brush things we have available at each of our saunas all about?!

The leafy dried twig brushes used in saunas, commonly known as vihta or vasta (in Finnish) or venik (in Russian), are bundles of fresh twigs, typically from birch trees. They are an essential part of traditional sauna practices in Finland, Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe.

What is their purpose and the benefits of using them?

✨Skin stimulation: the gentle slapping of the skin with the vihta improves blood circulation and exfoliates the skin.

👃Aromatherapy: birch twigs release essential oils, creating a refreshing and calming aroma that enhances relaxation.

😌Muscle relaxation: the process helps loosen tight muscles and relieve stress.

🌳Cultural tradition: it’s often used in ceremonial or social sauna gatherings, fostering a deeper connection to tradition and nature.

What are the types of twigs used?

🍃Birch: the most common due to its soft leaves and invigorating scent.
🪵Oak: preferred for its sturdier branches and calming effect, often used in Russian banyas.

We are fortunate to be able to welcome children age 5 and up into our sauna (when accompanied by an adult) which means a sauna can be a family affair.
